Lead and phthalates in children’s products

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP):
Mr. Speaker, children are particularly vulnerable to the serious neurological damage caused by lead, and to the reproductive and other harms associated with phthalates used in many plastics.

New Democrats have been introducing bills and motions in the House for over a decade to get these products out of circulation. Some of us have even been at it for a dozen years.

Cuts to Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP):
Mr. Speaker, the WHMIS regulatory authority coordinates intergovernmental efforts and will be asked to play a major role in the implementation of new UN standards.

Workers rely on the system to protect them from hazardous materials at work, but the Conservatives want to cut the national authority's budget by $2.6 million.

Medical Isotopes

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP):
Mr. Speaker, 18 months ago, the government was faced with a 20-day shutdown of isotope production and said that we had to put aside nuclear safety in the interest of patient safety.

Now, faced with a shutdown that will last at least a month, maybe many months, the government is saying “ration” the isotopes.

CNA Nurse Shortage Proposals

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP): Mr. Speaker, the nursing shortage is expected to explode to 60,000 nurses within the next 12 years. The Canadian Nurses Association is marking today nurse recognition day with meaningful recommendations for action on recruitment, retention and attrition to head off this impending crisis. The government seems committed to doing something but lacks direction.
