Status of Women, TB Prevention and Microfinancing in Bangladesh

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP):
Mr. Speaker, who among us was not horrified by the revelations brought to the House by the member for New Westminster—Coquitlam about the Karzai Afghan regime's plans to subordinate and subjugate women? Not only is this deeply disturbing in terms of human rights but also in terms of the lost potential it represents.

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP):

Budget Debate – Bill C-10

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP):
Madam Speaker, I am pleased to participate in the debate on this group of amendments to Bill C-10, the budget implementation bill. I believe it would be appropriate at this point to actually recap where we are, so Canadians understand just how significant this debate is and how we are at a defining moment in the life of our country.

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP): Mr. Speaker, I want to commend my colleague from the Bloc Québécois for introducing this motion and for her passion today on a very important matter. I want to continue with the theme of the attack on pay equity as very much an expression of symbolic violence against women. Whether it is physical or psychological, the damage is felt.

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP): Mr. Speaker, today I rise with more sadness and concern than I have experienced in my 20 years in elected public office and my 30 years of fighting for women's equality.

Yesterday the Liberals gave a blank cheque to the Conservatives to kill pay equity. They sold out their principles. They let down the women of Canada. They decided to sacrifice pay equity on the altar of political expediency.

Pay Equity

Bill C-10 – Budget Implimentation Act - Conservatives' Attack on Pay Equity for Women

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP): Madam Speaker, I do not believe my colleagues in the Liberal Party really understand what is at stake here. If it was not apparent before either in the doomed economic statement of November 27 or the recent budget, then it should be clear now based on what is in this legislation, Bill C-10, the budget implementation act.
