Liberal Tough Talk = Conservative Support

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP): Mr. Speaker, the member for Davenport started off his speech by saying that we could have had this debate two months ago. He is absolutely right because we are no further ahead today than we were at the end of November.

Pay Equity

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP): Madam Speaker, I want to congratulate the new member for Newmarket—Aurora on her election. She said that it is an awesome responsibility. I am wondering if she is actually aware of the awesome disappointment that people across this country, especially among the women of Canada, are feeling in terms of her government's budget.

RCMP Salary Cutbacks

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP): Mr. Speaker, I want to thank the member for Portage—Lisgar for her speech today and really question her talking very positively about this new spending of her government in areas that are making some traditional Conservatives very nervous, while not touching at all on areas where the government is cutting back, particularly when it comes to traditional Conservative strengths, for example, law and order.

Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP) moved for leave to introduce Bill C-254, An Act to amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (exception to inadmissibility).

Mr. Speaker, I am introducing this bill as the way of righting a wrong in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. The section that is in contention currently allows the exclusion of persons with disabilities from immigrating to Canada.

WASYLYCIA-LEIS DEMANDS END TO IMMIGRATION ACT’S DISCRIMINATION AGAINST PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

WINNIPEG – NDP Critic for Persons with Disabilities Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North) today called on the Harper government to act quickly to end the Immigration Act’s built-in discrimination against persons with disabilities. The call comes in the wake of the deportation this morning of Winnipeg resident Christopher Mason.

“Kicking Chris Mason out of Canada because he became physically disabled is intolerable,” says Wasylycia-Leis. “We say we don’t discriminate – Canada has even signed international treaties pledging we won’t – yet the Immigration Act effectively says: ‘Everyone is welcome in Canada except persons with disabilities. Get lost.’ Canadians don’t support this approach and the government should move as quickly as possible to get rid of it.”

Point of Order – House Decorum

Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis: Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order. I know you have not ruled or felt that it was appropriate to call the member for Peterborough to order for his language, such as “traitor” or “infiltration”, however, I would like to appeal to you, as the Speaker of the House, that my rights as a member have been violated by the member for Peterborough, who continues to shout so loud and with such vulgarity, it is impossible to hear anything at this end of the House. I would like you to bring some order to the House and have him at least show some courtesy and decency in this place.
